Background |
Program Author—John A. BaronKines-TechSM was developed by John A. Baron, a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, who trained and worked in his native England. He has a creative arts and business background in marketing, publishing and teaching. John worked as an executive for the British Association for Commercial and Industrial Education and launched his own successful publishing company Marketing Media. Before coming to the USA in 1992, he lived and worked in Rome, Italy as a postural re-education specialist at a sports / occupational medicine clinic. John has taught at universities and performing arts colleges both in Europe and the USA and his own course, Tension and Performance, became a credit class at a California State University. He has worked extensively with performing artists who have suffered 'on the job' injuries as well as people who suffer from 'overuse injury' and general muscular skeletal problems. It was after working in these areas for many years that John began to develop the Kines-TechSM Training program. He saw that the skills required to play a musical instrument while practicing/performing were not dissimilar to those needed to operate a computer keyboard in today's workplace. The experience he gained from over 20,000 hours of hands-on teaching, his understanding of the principles of F. M. Alexander's remarkable work, and his own business and training background were combined to produce this innovative training program, Kines-TechSM. John is the Co-Director of the Alexander Educational Center in Berkeley, CA, a training school for teachers of the Alexander Technique. He recently recorded F. M. Alexander's "The Use Of The Self" as an audio book on tape. Kines-TechSM TrainersAll Trainers are specialists in postural re-education, having initially undergone a three year training (1600 classroom hours) in the Alexander Technique as well as further follow-up training to qualify them as Kines-Tech trainers. The Alexander TechniqueThe demands of modern living have affected our natural conditions and abilities. Within a comparatively short time our environment has been greatly altered. We slump over desks, collapse in chairs, drive cars in endless rush hours, tensely key into computers, work in cramped offices and generally try to adapt ourselves to the conditions of a technological age. As a result people no longer 'use' themselves correctly. In fact they 'Mis-use' themselves. The hunching of the shoulders, twisting of the rib cage, collapse of the spine, locking of the joints, and clenching of muscles due to tension and anxiety are just some examples of 'Mis-use'.
The Alexander Technique was developed by F. M. Alexander over 100 years ago, first as a means for overcoming his own crippling tensions and 'Mis-use,' and then as a means for addressing this condition in others. Recognizing the importance of his own discovery, Alexander went on to establish his Technique in Australia, London and subsequently in the USA. The Alexander Technique continues to increase in popularity because it works. Recent research carried out in England has shown it to be the "most effective self-care method for chronic pain management." The Alexander Technique teaches how to regain the use of the whole self and to correct habits of 'Mis-use' that interfere with health, free movement and general well being.
